What does a bad throwout bearing sound like in an idling motor? How about a bad clutch or pressure plate? I just installed a rebuilt 1835 and it sounds like the something inside the bell housing is hitting.

depends on how bad I guess...

But a dead giveaway is that it will diminish, or disappear when you press the clutch pedal. When you do so, you put pressure on the bearing and load it.

Mine's slowly going out, and it has a tendancy to whine at idle.

Thanks so much for your feedback; I pulled the engine after I posted this and found that the flywheel nut backed off. When I installed it, I lathered it up with loctite blue, used my cheezy impact wrench, and just to be safe, I finished it off with a 58" cheater bar with my second 1/2" Craftsman breaker bar (first one snaped at the head).

I bought a new impact wrench that torques too 500lbs and this time I hit it up with loctite RED. Bitch ain't coming off; I'm thinking about hitting it with the mig.

The bug has a racing transmission that david Crow of Austin built. The best time I ran at the Motorplex was a 13.91 at 95pmh on pump gas, Phillips 76 times were at 14.00 to 14.10 in the quarter. If y'all know someone in the market, please let them know. It has a ton of goodies and NIB items.
