Okay, so I dunno much about the earlier years of type 1's...
So what year does this car sound like?
First off, no vin tag on the body, and I haven't checked the pan yet.
But here's your basic description:
Late model style body with big flat windshield.
short 70's style hood and decklid.
No moon vents behind quarters-factory.
front fenders 67-72 style with bumper slots.
rear fenders slotted with "tombstone" lights.
dash pad.
tall style seats.
windshield washer switch on dash.
on either door, there's a cable sheath, and lever. Like the hood release. looks like factory welded tabs.
Sunroof model-metal. looks OG.
rear window defroster style.
and wide five swingaxle.
Now the part that gets me...
ball joint front beam with wide five drum setup.
any guesses?
it was registered as a '67 last time it was.
parting it out BTW.

As I understand it, '67 was the only year that did that. It was a transition year ( link-pin to ball joint) and not all of them were like that.

I would say very early 68. 68 did have swing axle, but not the wide 5.
68 had the new style fenders and hood, tall seats, hood realease and exterior gas door. The only thing 67 or earlier on this car is the wide 5. Everything else is late model.
67 also had a wiper washer on the dash, no pad. 67 had a one year only deck lid too. No vents. 68 had vents on the deck lid.

The Sun Bug was a special model... sebeetles.com
I think it's an early 68... There were a lot of 67 only parts that got onto the early 68s... Steve from Austin has an early 68 that came from the factory with a metal dash!!
The 68 had the largest of the highback seats... the got a little narrower at the top in 69 and stayed that way. The 68 is the only year there is not a switch to open the gas flap but the first year for it.
Hope that helps!

Much appreciated guys!
Today I started pulling it apart, figured out a little bit more of the story...
The body shell is apparently a '70 model.
And the pan seems to be a '67.
hmm....

Concur...also...look at the fuel door,if there is a finger dimple on the body to open the door,68.69 up is flat.(due to interrior locking mechanism).
